During your shopping, you may wish to look for appropriate concert wear. All MS Band students are expected to “dress up” for all concert performances. We have always found that dressing up for a concert helps to make it a “special” event, and the students perform even better! Musicians generally dress conservatively for performances. While we may wear the latest fashion for other events, the main consideration for a musical performance needs to be more practical: will I be comfortable playing my instrument in this attire?
Concert Dress = Concert Black
The MS Band has adopted “Concert Black” for all formal, concert performances. This helps to create a more appropriate concert atmosphere & more consistent appearance. Simply put: black bottoms (pants, capris, or long skirt; no shorts or “skorts”) and solid white or black top (no writing on the shirt; no spaghetti straps or exposed midriff). Ladies may opt to wear a solid black dress, as long as the skirt falls below the knee when standing.
A word of caution to the young ladies: Please be certain that the outfit you select will be appropriate when you are playing your instrument! It is very difficult to sit with correct posture & play if your skirt is too short! Skirts above the knee and spaghetti strap tops are NOT appropriate choices to wear for a Band Concert. A skirt that falls below the knee when you are standing will be long enough when seated.
Gentlemen: Ties are AWESOME! Show off your “fashion sense” or your interests with a fun, colorful tie! It helps to make the concert a special event.
We will wear Concert Black for our December and April Band Concerts. Concert Black is optional for Solo & Ensemble Festival, and other, informal performances (Solo & Ensemble Qualifications & Recital, school assemblies, etc.) Students will be given specific directions regarding appropriate attire for every performance.
Marching Uniform
Students will also need a “uniform” in May for our marching performances. The uniform consists of tan/khaki shorts or pants (depending on the weather), white ankle socks and athletic shoes. Students will also wear the Waunakee Bands polo shirt (dark purple with our logo). You will receive info to order the shirts in April.
