The Waunakee Middle School Bands perform two major concerts each year: a formal concert (December) in the HS Performing Arts Center, and a Spring Collage Concert (April) in the MS Gym.
The Eighth Grade Band typically has one-two additional performance each year: the Veteran's Day Assembly (even-numbered years) or the Eighth Grade Recognition Ceremony (odd-numbered years).
The Combined MS Bands march one-two parades each year: Syttendi Mai Parade (Stoughton) on even-numbered years, and Memorial Day Parade (Waunakee) every year.
Concert Performances and Parades are a graded activity in Band.
The Waunakee Music Department has adopted the following expectations for guidance in grading performances outside of the school day:
- Band is a music performing class, with most performances taking place outside of the school day.
- Since a student elects to take band, we expect that students will participate in all of the performances.
- If a student must miss a performance due to a family commitment, written notification is needed as soon as possible — at least one week in advance. This will allow the director to make any necessary adjustments within the band (such as reassigning a solo).
- Performances are one component of your child’s grade. If a student misses a performance, he/she misses the points for that activity.
- The Building Principal will decide if an absence is excused or unexcused.
- Students may ask for a make-up assignment for an excused absence. Links for different types of make-up projects are listed at this link.
- If a student must miss a performance due to illness or family emergency, please call the music office at 849-8035 before the performance. The student can check with the teacher on their return for details about making up the points for the absence.
