I strongly believe that students should take an active part in their education. To help achieve this level of engagement, there are certain key words that will be used throughout this school year. These keywords are:
INTEGRITY:
We will do our best both behaviorally and academically, even if no one is watching. Academically, we will do our work to the very best of our ability, without taking shortcuts or just completing work so that it is done. The work ethic we create in school will help us for the rest of our life. Behaviorally, we will hold ourselves to our high standards, and not rely on anyone else to tell us what we already know is right.
INSIGHT:
We will dig for deeper understanding when learning about different concepts. We will not learn just for a grade; we will learn to help us to grow. Our answers will be well thought out and elaborated upon to show our deeper understanding.
CHOICES:
We will have a voice in different aspects of our classroom. With the privilege of choice, also comes responsibility. The choices you make today determine the rest of your life! We will be choosing the values of our classroom, and then will have to abide by these values. We will be choosing various things from who will I sit by? or who will I share my locker with? to which trade book will my group choose? We will have to decide which answers to these questions will benefit us or harm us. This is a life long skill!
RESPECT:
We will AT ALL TIMES show respect to each other, the Waunakee Intermediate community, and, as importantly, ourselves. Many people stress the respect towards others, which is important. We will actively listen to others, support each other (with no put downs or judgments), and treat each other as we would like to be treated. However, it is just as important to respect ourselves. When we have self-respect, we begin to see the qualities underlined in the word integrity.
I don't foresee any problems with the kind of learning community we will be a part of this year. If or when any difficulty comes up, I will definitely keep you informed, and when I see your child shine, I will also definitely let you know! Because you are your child's primary teacher, you will have valuable insight for me. I welcome any discussions that will result in success for your child!
This will be a great year!

We will continue to have morning milk daily throughout the school year at the end of our communication arts period. Students may bring in healthy snacks to eat along with their milk each day.
