Before beginning this project, students viewed paintings by 5 surrealist painters. We looked at work by Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Marc Chagall, Frida Kahlo, and local artist Helen Klebesadel. Students were asked to notice how the artists created impossible situations or combined objects in unrealistic ways. We discussed how the surrealists wanted to connect the everyday rational world with the unconscious, or dream, world.
To create their compositions students cut images out of magazines and thought of creative ways to combine them or creative environments to place them. Half of their compositions were to be drawn and the other half collaged. This was quite a challenge, but the results were fantastic!
