Students discussed Dadaism and Surrealism, two art movements started around the time of WWI. The artists of these movements created works that shocked viewers. They often worked collaboratively on projects to celebrate the unpredictable nature of art.
As a class, students created Exquisite Corpse drawings based on a game played by the Dadaists and Surrealists. Each artist started with a piece of paper folded into thirds, and each student drew the top part of a unique creature. The paper was folded so the the first drawing could not be seen and the paper was passed on to another artist. The middle part of the figure was drawn, folded, passed on, etc. By the end of the game, the class had a set of crazy Exquisite Corpses that could be displayed.
For this collaborative project, students created "portraits" based on the Exquisite Corpse Game. They worked as a team to trace a template onto 4 pieces of paper. The papers were distributed and each student made an original collage with magazine pieces. The pieces were mixed up and displayed.
