Students were introduced to bestiaries made by artists and craftsmen in Medieval Europe.  They viewed slides of actual examples, and examined a children's book that shared similar features.  (Bestiary: An Illuminated Alphabet of Medieval Beasts by Jonathan Hunt.)

The creatures were designed and visual texture was added using pen and ink.  Colored pencils, watercolor, and/or shading provided the final touch.
