Students learned about contour lines before beginning this project. (Contour lines are lines that define the edges of an object or form.) They practiced making blind contour drawing (drawing without looking at the paper) of their hands and of their classmates shoes.
After completing several thumbnail sketches of their shoes, students chose the best composition and transferred it to a large piece of watercolor paper. The pencil lines were drawn darker using sharpie markers and tempera paint was used to paint inside the black marker lines. The last step was to create an antique look to the paintings using an ink wash.
