PBIS is a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning.
As part of the PBIS program, we focus on STaRR values: being Safe, Trustworthy (And) Respectful, Responsible. We have established several clear rules for the behavior we expect in all areas of our school. These rules are clearly displayed in posters placed throughout the school and playground areas and are specific to classroom, hallway, bathroom, cafeteria, playground and lining up behaviors. The posters also give examples of “Below The Line” and “Bottom Line” behaviors. These posters will help students identify their behaviors and promote consistency with all staff with their expectations. You should be able to ask your student, “What are the rules in your school?” “How do you follow these rules?” “What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules?” and get clear answers.
Our school rules specifically address inappropriate behaviors, provide for a safer school environment and give more time for instruction. Consistent consequences and positive reinforcement for all students will be applied by all staff. A team of teachers and para-educators have worked hard throughout the summer on the details of this program for Heritage. Staff have received training with details of expected behaviors and how to teach to kids in a positive way. As a result, we have provided a common language for everyone at Heritage, including students, teachers, front office staff and our para educators.
It is our belief that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community where all students have an environment where they can succeed and grow.
Your input and your involvement are welcome and encouraged. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need further information. Thank you for your support!
With your help, all of our young students will be STaRRs this year.
