"People tend to take more time planning for a family vacation than helping a student/child to prepare for a career.” (author unknown)
The Waunakee Community School District School to Career (STC) Program is one of the fastest changing sectors of our district.
With the focus of helping students to explore future careers, the district participates in the Badger Consortium (DeForest, Middleton, Monona Grove, Mount Horeb, Waunakee, Wisconsin Heights) which helps to train staff, coordinate apprenticeship and articulation agreements with Madison Area Technical College, and provide Programs of Study in 79 broad career pathways.
The School to Career Coordinator works in partnership with the Waunakee/Westport Chamber of Commerce and sits on the Chamber Board of Directors. Partnership activities include “welcome back goodie bags” for district employees, Community Partnerships course that welcomes teachers to Business After Hours gatherings at area businesses, job bulletin boards, business partners helping with mock job interviews and providing car wash locations for service learning projects. Many area businesses also offer co-op and youth apprenticeship students job opportunities and mentor students in their career area of interest.
The district is a member of Powered Up, a business initiative to promote Information Technology careers to students. In addition, the School to Career Coordinator is a member of the state Project Lead the Way Leadership Team, providing engineering curricula for our students.
The STC Program offers the following opportunities open to all students: Program of Study planning, job shadowing, career interest surveys, MATC Career Pathway events, individualized career discussions, co-ops, youth apprenticeships (junior-senior), Student Technical Support program and service learning opportunities.
