Character Education

Welcome to the Intermediate School. We are so pleased to have your child(ren) with us. Our mission statement is “Empower students to be committed to learning, community and excellence.” We teach our students the 3 R’s – to be RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE and RESOURCEFUL.

Each year our children surpass academic standards, but our students need to also be people of character and service. In our society today, we have a strong sense of how much character matters. We need good character to lead purposeful, productive and fulfilling lives. We need character to have strong and stable families. We need character to have safe, caring and effective schools. For these reasons, we are beginning our Character Matters initiative.

Just who is responsible for making sure that every student in our school achieves academically, cares about their fellow human beings, uses manners, shows compassion and empathy for others – in short, displays good character? We, at Waunakee Intermediate School, believe that it is the responsibility of every individual and I hope you will join us in our effort. Together we can accomplish great things for our school and community.

We will emphasize nine character traits during the school year. These include respect, responsibility, honesty, caring, self-discipline, fairness, perseverance, courage and citizenship.

Research shows that effective character education improves academic performance, prepares young people to be responsible citizens, helps make schools more caring and reduces student behavior problems.

I firmly believe that we must educate both the hearts and minds of our students. It is one of our priorities to ensure that character education is a part of every student’s learning experience.

“When teachers and parents work toward forming a partnership, communicating regularly and respectfully, only positive things result.”   Donald Campbell
