What phone number do I call if my child will be absent from school?
Call 849-2065 between 7:00-9:00 a.m. It is very important to call prior to 9:00 a.m. so that we can advise teachers of student absences. We must have a signed excuse from the parent/guardian when the child returns to keep with the student records for the year.
If I want my child to ride the bus home with a friend, what approval is needed and how soon in advance?
Both students must be bus riders and need to submit signed, written requests by both respective parents to the office one full day prior to the date they plan to ride together. This must be approved by administration. (Example: Ms. X wants her child Leah to ride home with Ms. Y’s child Nina. Ms. X writes a note such as this: “My daughter Leah rides bus 11 normally. Tonight, she needs to ride with Nina on bus 14.” Ms. Y writes a note similar to: “I am aware that my daughter Nina is bringing home Leah on bus 14.”)
How can I get my child’s homework if they are absent from school?
Parents and students are encouraged to check the teacher website first before requesting homework as a great deal of information is on the teacher website. Secondly, we invite parents/students to contact the teacher directly via e-mail. If the teacher desires that homework be completed, the information will be available outside of the MS office by the end of the day (3:30 p.m.). The homework will be labeled with the student’s name. Parents can leave a message, requesting homework, at the office when they call in the student’s absence (608) 849-2065. Homework will be put on the table outside the office.
What is the procedure for dropping off/picking up my child?
Adults transporting students should enter off South Street; proceed up the loop towards the main entrance on the east side of the building. Parents/guardians may also use South Street or neighboring streets to pick up their children. Parents/guardians may not use the bus loop for drop off or pick up on the south end of the building. Please be cautious of children on bikes, skateboards, in-line skates, scooters, or walking.
Where do students wait before the first bell at 8:07?

Where can I find the required forms for over-the-counter or prescription medication?
Sample forms are included at the back of the MS Family Handbook and on the middle school website. Contact the school nurse or school office if you need additional copies.
How many school locks should I purchase for my child?
The school provides two lockers (one in the hallway and one in the PE locker room) for each student's convenience. Locks are sold to the student. Locks will be sold through mail in registration and distributed to students during the first week of school by the homeroom or physical education teacher. These locks will be used through high school and are keyed for administration to open at any time. All locks must be purchased through the school. Non-school locks will be cut off.
What school supplies are needed?
Current supply lists are on the middle school web site. You can order your supplies online through the company identified on the website. If you need a hard copy of the lists sent to you, please call the office at 849-2072.
Where can I make payment to my child’s lunch account?

Can my child carry or use a cell phone?
Students may not use cell phones and any other two-way communication devices during the school day or during any school sponsored activities (e.g., parties, field trips, bus transportation to or from school or school activities). Students are expected to keep the cell phone, turned off, in their assigned locker. If a student is using a cell phone or has it out during the school day, it will be confiscated by school staff and returned to the student the first time, to the parent the second time, and if it is confiscated for a third time, it will be held until the end of the semester. Every classroom has a telephone. Students are expected to make arrangements with their parents/guardians outside of school. In the event that a student needs to use a phone, the teacher will provide the classroom telephone and will monitor the call.
What is a Middle School Party?
MS Parties are sponsored by the Student Council. The dates are listed on the district calendar. Only Waunakee Community Middle School students may attend. All Middle School rules apply and specific expectations for parties were developed in cooperation with the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC). Parties are held when we have at least 30 chaperones. Interested parents should contact the office. Please refer to the MS Family Handbook or the website for additional guidelines and expectations.
Where is the “Lost and Found?”
Lost and found is generally located in the back (west) hallway. Check for missing items regularly. Unclaimed items are donated to charities periodically throughout the school year.
What is nutrition break?
Nutrition break is offered from 9:50-10:00 a.m. in the 3rd period class. Students should bring nutritious snacks (fruit, nuts, and granola bars) to eat during that time. Students should not bring candy or similar items (chocolate, chips, soda, etc.) for their snack. Drinks are not permitted. Nutritious snacks may be available for purchase at the school.
Where can I learn about activities taking place in school?
Students should listen for the daily announcements. The daily announcements are also posted on the middle school webpage. Additional information is shared through homeroom, the Middle School web page, and the district calendar.
What are the marking periods?
Four times each year students receive a grade report or report card. Parents/guardians are encouraged to sign up for “Infinite Campus.” This service allows parents and students to check daily attendance and grades on a regular basis on the internet. Teachers may also communicate with parents/guardians using progress reports. This may be done in hard copy or via e-mail. If parents desire information from teachers prior to the marking periods, we ask that they send an e-mail request each time they would like the information. We ask that parents not request “regular” updates from teachers, but rather parents initiate the request for a response from teachers.
Where can I find the dates for parent teacher conferences?
Check the MS or district web page or the district calendar. Parents/guardians are encouraged to contact their child's teacher(s) in advance. E-mail is an excellent means for contacting teachers. All teachers can be reached via e-mail using the link on the web page.
What are the general school rules?
We work to promote a positive, safe learning and working environment based on mutual respect. We have the following few, easy to understand expectations:
¨ No one may harm people or property.
¨ No one may use inappropriate (foul, abusive, harassing, vulgar) language.
¨ Students are to keep hands, feet and objects to themselves.
¨ Students are to do what they are told to do the first time they are told.
¨ Students may not interfere with learning or teaching.
These simple rules are supported by the laws, regulations, and policies outlined in the handbook.
When are building detentions served?
Building detentions are served on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:25-3:45 p.m. (during 2-4 quarters). First quarter detentions are served Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:25-3:45 p.m. Please check the detention schedule for the designated locations. (Classroom detentions are served with the teacher as determined by the teacher.)
What can students wear to school?
Student dress should be appropriate for a working and learning environment, as well as create and promote respect and responsibility. Students are expected and required to wear clothing that is neat, clean, is safe, fits well, is properly worn, and reflects good taste. Refer to the family handbook for specific guidelines and recommendations under “Grooming/Dress.”
Who is the best person to inform me about school events and activities?
Your child is the best person to start with. Additional information may be available from the homeroom teacher, middle school web page, district calendar, and/or Middle School office.
How can parents/guardians get more involved in the Middle School activities/events?
Complete and submit a volunteer form or contact the school office, 849-2060. Parents/guardians are invited to participate in various meetings, activities, and programs throughout the school year.
How can I learn more about the Middle School co-curricular offerings?
Check the Waunakee Community Co-Curricular Handbook or visit the Middle School web page on co-curricular activities. The District calendar has specific start dates for athletic co-curricular activities. Students should listen to or read the daily announcements regarding additional athletic and non-athletic co-curricular activities and events.
