Welcome to the Waunakee Community Middle School website. Our mission statement provides us with clear direction for our work with students, parents, and colleagues. We are committed to children, committed to community, and committed to excellence!
We are proud to be the home to over 500 energetic 7th and 8th grade students and our staff who adds their expertise, experience, and special training about early adolescent learners to insure we offer rich and engaging learning opportunities to our students.
TEAMS ARE AT THE HEART OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL
Every student belongs to one of the 7th or 8th grade teaching teams. These teams consist of teachers who collaborate and communicate to support learning in the core content areas of communication arts, math, social studies, and science.
Our students work with their team teachers several times throughout the week. This helps to create a special bond between students, their families, and teachers. Team teachers are also the main conduit for sharing information with families. Please explore the website for more information on each teaching team.
Students are also assigned to homerooms. Homeroom provides students with the opportunity to establish powerful, positive, relationships with their teachers. These relationships focus on the students’ academic and emotional needs and can provide the safe learning environment each student needs.
SUPPORTING STUDENT INTERESTS
In addition to the teams of core content area teachers and specialists, our students learn from a variety of teachers with expertise in the following exploratory and elective content areas: art, band, chorus, orchestra, general music, vocational exploratory, technical education, family and consumer education, health education, physical education, Spanish, and French. All students participate in physical education every other day. You can discover more information about each of these classes on the website.
OUR SCHOOL DAY
Our students participate in eight classes a day. Classes are 45 minutes long with five minutes of passing time between classes. Between 2nd and 3rd hours we have a ten minute nutrition break during which students are invited to enjoy a nutritious snack. Students have a 35 minute lunch period during which they typically enjoy playing a variety of games or visiting with friends. Details about our school schedule are available on our website.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
We are proud of the large numbers of students who take advantage of the extensive co-curricular programs offered at our middle school. Students can select jazz band, one-act plays, dramas, musicals, forensics, student council, yearbook, Science Olympiad, volleyball, wrestling, softball, track and field, football, and cross country. We strongly encourage students to be involved in school sponsored, structured, and supervised after school activities. We invite you to visit the co-curricular information on the website to learn more.
ASSESSING STUDENT SKILL, KNOWLEDGE, AND PROGRESS IS INTEGRAL TO STUDENT SUCCESS
All of our students participate in a variety of assessment activities. All students participate in the reading and math components of the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE) in November. In addition to reading and math, our 8th graders are also assessed on science, social studies, language usage, and reading at the same time. Our 8th graders participate in the EXPLORE test (a component of the ACT test) in September. At the same time 7th grade students are assessed in reading, language usage, and math on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). The MAP assessment is used in grades 2-8 in our district and provides a more individualized profile of student achievement over time. We actively use the results of our assessments to provide the best educational experiences for our students. We invite you to check the results on our website. Please see the WKCE, MAP, EXPLORE, and WINSS information on the website.
CONNECTING WITH OUR PARENTS
We invite parents to partner with us. Parents can view attendance and grades online through Infinite Campus. Additionally, teachers keep parents well informed through postings on their websites, e-mails, progress reports, and formal grade reports. We know that our students’ success depends on encouragement and support from parents and staff members working together.
