Health Education is a required class for 8th graders, and meets all year on alternate days. Our Health Education teacher is Mr. Steve Ryan.
Content:
- Nutrition: basic nutrients, caloric values, food pyramid, fitness, diet and relationship to health. The issue of eating disorders will also be addressed.
- Safety & First Aid: closely follows standards of the American Red Cross courses: Standard First Aid which gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic first aid care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Skills covered include controlling bleeding; caring for muscle, bone and joint injuries; treating burns; treating cold and heat emergencies; and responding to shock. CPR--Child and CPR Infant which gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in children and infants until advanced medical personnel come & take over.
- Human Growth and Development: The overall goal of the Human Growth and Development Unit at Waunakee Middle School is to provide students with factual, age-appropriate information and skill attitudes concerning relationships, sexuality and human reproduction. It is the intent of the Health Education’s Human Reproduction Unit that students will make positive and healthy choices that result in behavior that contributes the well-being of the individual, the family, and society.The Human Growth and Development Unit in Waunakee Middle School Health Education class includes: 1) the study of the reproduction system’s anatomy and physiology of males and females. 2) the changes that occur during adolescence, the concept of fertilization and conception. 3) the basic development of humans during pregnancy. 4) a review of the causes and effects of sexually transmitted infections.

- Drug Education: identify the major classifications of drugs: stimulants, depressants, cannabis, hallucinogens, narcotics, prescriptions medications, inhalants. Also identify the major drugs of each classification and their effects.
