March…. It’s a Middle Level Celebration!

We invite you to join the students and staff of Waunakee Community Middle School during the month of March to help us celebrate National Middle Level Education Month. This annual recognition of middle level education provides us with a special opportunity to focus the attention of our community and the nation on a very special time in the educational careers of children.

It is crucial for middle level students to experience achievement in this era of accountability. The futures of our middle school children will be profoundly influenced by the new emphasis on standards and the accompanying assessments. As educators and parents, we have the charge and the challenge to help children recognize this and to provide them with the opportunities and guidance they need to focus on achievement and success.

Throughout the month of March, Waunakee Community Middle School will host a variety of activities that celebrate our teachers and young adolescents, as well as excellence in middle level education. We know that middle school is the time when friends and activities saturate children's schedules and that their time is being filled by more rigorous assignments as well as participation in sports and other activities. We encourage you to get involved and to help us celebrate by supporting our efforts at home. This can be done by setting aside some time each day for discussions of your child's assignments, responsibilities, and daily experiences. Whatever you do, remember to celebrate your children's efforts and successes.

Join us this month in celebrating all the great people and experiences that are connected to early adolescents and middle level education!

THIS I BELIEVE…

by National Middle School Association (NMSA)

I have chosen to be a middle level educator; for I recognize that the years of early adolescence are pivotal and abound with individual potential and opportunity. Therefore, I will care for these students personally, listen to their voices, respect their concerns, and engage them in meaningful educational experiences that will prepare them for a promising future.

I believe that every young adolescent…

· has the capacity to learn, grow, and develop into a knowledgeable, reflective, caring, ethical, and contributing citizen.

· must have access to the very best programs and practices a school can offer.

· must be engaged in learning that is relevant, challenging, integrative, and exploratory.

· thrives academically, socially, and emotionally in a democratic learning environment where trust and respect are paramount and where family and community are actively involved.

· faces significant life choices and needs support in making wise and healthy decisions.

· deserves educators who are prepared to work with this age group, who are themselves lifelong learners and committed to their own ongoing professional development and growth.

Therefore, I proudly dedicate myself to becoming the best middle level educator I can be and an active advocate for all young adolescents.
