October is the Month of the Young Adolescent (MOYA).  During this special time, the students and staff at Waunakee Community Middle School are once again celebrating our youth. Throughout this month, our Student Council will host a variety of activities to highlight our young adolescents. Student Council representatives will collaborate with staff members to create opportunities that recognize and celebrate our students’ development.

Our students, staff members, parents, and community members want to take this opportunity to celebrate our adolescent learners. We recognize and celebrate the importance of this unique time of our students' intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development.

Kick off to MOYA, treats supplied to all homerooms by Student Council.

Oct. 4^th – 7^th   ~ Spirit Week

            Tuesday:  Hat Day…any hat will do, but the crazier the better!

            Wednesday: Favorite Jersey Day

            Thursday: Pajama Day

            Friday: 7^th Grade Black Out/ 8^th grade White Out

Oct. 10^th – 14^th ~ Kindness Week

Purchase a candy gram during lunch on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to be delivered to your friends and teachers.  Delivery takes place on Friday during homerooms.  Each candy gram is $1.

            18^th  ~ Bring out the Red…Wear Red to support our drug free school!

            19^th  ~ Sock it to drugs day…Wear Crazy Socks and Slippers

            20^st ~ First All School DANCE!!!  7-9 pm

Oct. 24^th – 26^th ~  Ice Cream Sales after school.  Treats will be $1. 

Monday, October 31- Halloween Dress Up Day ~ wear your Halloween costume if you’d like!

MOYA Art/Writing Contest:

“The World Through My Eyes”

Your challenge is to create a work of art or writing that gives your own adolescent perspective on the world.  The possibilities are endless!  Some ideas include:

• Paint a picture
• Write a short story
• Make a sketch
• Create a sculpture
• Write a poem
• Record yourself performing a song
• Use photography to tell a story

Entries will be judged on:

1. Originality- your individual voice and personality are evident in your work, and your work is unique.
2. Creativity- you use an interesting writing style, unique materials, etc.  Your work is something that stands out to others.
3. Quality- your work is neat, clear, demonstrates that you put time and effort into it, and is something you would be proud to present to others.
4. Adhering to the theme- your work clearly tells or shows others what the world is like through your eyes.

Entries are due no later than the end of the day on Wednesday, October 19.  You may turn your entry into Ms. Block or Ms. Meffert in Room 240.

Two grand prize winners (one for art, and one for writing) will be chosen.  The winners will be announced at the end of the day on Thursday, October 20.  Top entries will also be put on display during the last week of October.
