Prairie Student News Team:
The newly formed Student News Broadcast is shared with students and staff of Prairie School through the efforts of ten dedicated 4th graders who have embraced the role of student reporters. These ten students have chosen to give up their recess time to meet in the student news room to produce this special montly broadcast. With limited teacher direction, these 4th graders track down leads, conduct interviews, gather information, and formulate a script to share the happenings at Prairie. The idea of developing the news show began with wanting more student voice heard at Prairie. A brainstorming meeting led to the idea to develop a student news team and the opportunity to become news hounds was offered to two students of each 4th grade class. The group meets to determine what type of stories they will share through collaboration and discussion. The newcast does a feature story, a sports report, weather report, interviews, and book reviews. They even have created commericials focusing on the manner of the week.
