In all classrooms, teachers support students by teaching reading skills and strategies across the curriculum. In addition, students who are not proficient with reading skills are also given support from the reading specialists through small group programs, one to one teaching, and grouping within the classroom setting. Reading specialists also complete informal assessments on students when classroom teachers or parents refer them for assessment. The first step for this assessment is to bring up the child’s name at the building Intervention Team Meetings. Ideas are discussed, progress is reviewed, test scores are reviewed, and then decisions are made regarding further assessment work.
Reading specialists also teach READ 180 classes for support in grades 5-12, and frequently specialists do team teaching in buildings to also support our students. Ideas and information are shared with staff on a regular basis by all reading support staff to ensure that the latest research is being implemented in all classrooms. The reading department also holds after school workshops for staff throughout the year. Specialists also work with our library personal to ensure the best books are ordered for student check-out in each of our libraries.
