School Safety

Waunakee Community School District is committed to creating a safe, welcoming environment for students, staff members, and visitors.  Individuals from the school district participate in specialized training to help prepare them to support safety in all aspects of the educational environment.  All administrators have been trained in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command Training through the support of experts at Wisconsin Emergency Management and Dane County Department of Emergency Management.  Select individuals have participated in specialized training offered through the Office of Justice Assistance and the Wisconsin School Safety Coordinators Associations.  Our school district offers a variety of ongoing training for students and staff members to prepare them to respond to a variety of emergency situations.

The Waunakee Community School District works collaboratively with our community agencies to improve communication and interoperability so that we are well prepared to work together when required in an emergency situation.  Members of the school district and community work on a District-Community Interagency Safety Committee throughout the school year.  Members of the committee include:  School District Administrators, the District Maintenance Director, Village Law Enforcement Agents, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Representatives of the Village Utilities.  We are pleased that members of the Dane County Department of Emergency Management and Wisconsin Emergency Management join us to offer information, training, and guidance.  The committee meets every other month throughout the school year to review and update existing plans and practices. 

Members of the Interagency Committee and all administrators have participated in tabletop exercises to assess the preparedness of all to respond to potential emergencies.  We will continue our collaborative efforts to insure school leaders and staff members are prepared to create and maintain and safe environment for all and to respond to potential emergencies.

The Waunakee Community School District works closely with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to create and maintain a safe school environment for all students, staff, and visitors. The DPI Safe Schools website offers a wealth of information.

Center for School Youth and Citizen Preparedness
School Crisis Preparedness Conferences, held annually during the month of October including current topics in prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. Safe Schools Week materials including posters, activities, websites and resources. Safe Schools Webcast Series - monthly webcasts produced by DPI - power point presentations that match the webcast can be downloaded. Links to free or no cost School Crisis Preparedness Resources including statewide and national school safety websites. School Preparedness and Youth program funding information and resources. Responding to Emergencies And Disasters with Youth (READY) Classes and Camps to educate youth in emergency preparedness skills and response, prevention, volunteerism and service learning opportunities, promoting leadership and team building skills, development of health, public safety, and emergency management careers, and encouraging personal responsibility. Ribbon of Promise Program - youth program to promote a positive and safe school environment and prevent bullying and school violence. Consultation and technical assistance in developing a school crisis preparedness plan and writing grants to fund initiatives.

Preparedness Month Resources. Homeland Security Program including preparedness information for animals and agriculture, business safety, emergency resources, grants, kids, seniors and disabled, training and exercises; Emergency situations including disease outbreak, fire, flooding, mass evacuation, power outages and utilities, severe weather, sheltering in place, travel conditions and frequently asked questions. School Crisis Preparedness Conferences - held annually during the month of October. Responding to Emergencies And Disasters with Youth (READY) Classes and Camps Initiatives for Secure Information Sharing. Campus Safety Information and Resources, including Governor Doyle's Task Force on Campus Safety. Funding Announcements for Homeland Security and Justice Initiatives. CERT - Community Emergency Response Team information and resources. Citizen Corps programs and resources Education and resources related to dealing with gangs.
