Summer Band - Grade 6
Frequently Asked Questions about Summer Band Lessons - Grade 6

What are the Intermediate School summer beginning and ending dates?

Our grade 5-8 summer school runs from June 18th to July 26th; Monday through Thursday.  This is a six week program. There is no summer school on July 4th-6th.

Where are the summer beginning band lessons taught?

Beginning band lessons are in the Intermediate School Band Room; teachers and signs will direct students the first day.

How often are lessons?

Students receive two lessons per week (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday). If you have a special need for one day or the other let us know in April.  You will receive an e-mail prompt.

How long do lessons last?

Each lesson is about an hour beginning at 8:00, 9:05, 10:20 or 11:25 AM.  This includes warm-up, playing, writing and instrument maintenance.

What happens when my child has other summer classes?

Lessons are scheduled between 8:00 AM and 12:25 PM.  Please note that this schedule is an hour longer than other summer classes.  We teach some lessons later than regular hours to avoid conflicts with other classes.  If students are in other summer classes we will try to schedule their lesson at an open time.  If we must take a student from a class we do not to take from a remedial class.  If a student rides the bus they must take a full schedule of classes.

How many lessons are there?

During the summer there will be a total of 11 lessons.

Will we get to hear what’s going on?

We will present a concert on Thursday, July 26, at 9:30 A.M.  Students need to arrive that morning at 7:50 A.M.  We rehearse in the intermediate school gym from 8:00 to 9:15 and let the audience in at 9:20.  Parents are welcome to sit in on lessons, too.

What about bus transportation?

Bus transportation is available for those who normally receive bussing.  Check the summer school information on the website for general transportation information.  If students ride the bus to and from summer school they will need to take a full schedule of classes.

How do we arrange for lessons?

Every student must have a completed the on-line summer school registration by April 27th.  You will be billed in May for all summer classes and notified of class and lesson times.

How do we find out our summer lesson times?

You will receive lesson times on the summer school billing invoice.

What about vacations and camps?

If you're gone for a vacation or attending a camp we schedule a make-up lesson before you leave and after you return if we know in advance, we contact you if your child is not at their lesson.

My child is in College for Kids.

College for Kids absences are made up at 1:00 PM during the College for Kids weeks.  Please contact us when you know that your child is in College for Kids.

Is there a report card?

A progress report is mailed at the end of summer school.

What about an instrument to play?

Students need an instrument; if you lease an instrument from Ward-Brodt the instrument will be delivered to the Intermediate School and will be ready for the first day of lessons.  If you rent a school baritone, it will be at the Intermediate School ready for the first lesson.  Please make arrangements to transport the baritone home.  The baritones can remain at home; students will use baritones that are kept at school for their lessons.

We have found a used instrument, what do we do?

If you purchase a used instrument, have it put in good playing condition before summer lessons.  A music store will look at the instrument and give you an estimate free of charge.  Please have the instrument ready to go the first day of lessons.  Please have a luggage type name tag on the case.

What about an instrument from the Internet?

Make certain you can return the instrument if it doesn’t work.  Not all instruments are made equally.  Some instruments are made of very soft metal and with regular use it can bend out of shape.  A music store will happily charge you each time you bring it in for repair.  If you go elsewhere to get an instrument, please do not play the instrument or put it together before instruction.  Please have a luggage type name tag on the case.

How do the students take care of their instruments?

Students will need cleaning supplies the first day of summer lessons.  If you purchase from Ward-Brodt the supplies will be delivered to the Intermediate School and will be ready for the first day of lessons.

What lesson book is used?

Students need the lesson book Essential Elements 2000 w/DVD.  If you purchase from Ward-Brodt the book will be delivered to the intermediate school and will be ready for the first day of lessons.

What other supplies do we need?

A list of all required supplies is found here.  A wire music stand is highly recommended for home practice. Click here for a detailed list of supplies. Supply list.
