Long-Range Planning for Our Schools

For more than a decade, the Waunakee Community School District has taken a thoughtful, long-range approach to facilities and financial planning. Every major facilities project and financial decision has been guided by community engagement, careful planning, and a commitment to responsible stewardship.

This process began during the 2012–2013 school year following a failed referendum in 2010. Through extensive community engagement, the district developed a long-range plan focused on ensuring every student has access to the learning environments and resources needed for success.

The proposed November 2026 referendum questions represent the third phase of that long-range plan. They continue the district's established approach to planning for educational needs, facilities, and financial sustainability.

Since 2012, the district has worked with students, staff, families, taxpayers, and community members to plan for enrollment growth, evolving educational programs, and aging facilities. Improvements have been completed in phases to support students across all grade levels.

The November 2026 referendum includes two separate questions:

Operational Referendum (Investing in People)

The operational referendum would provide additional funding to support district operations, including staff compensation, educational programming, and student support services.

Capital Referendum (Investing in Places)

The capital referendum represents the next phase of the district's long-range facilities plan. Proposed projects include improvements to the high school campus, modernization of instructional spaces, updated safety and security features, and renovations to portions of the facility that are more than 55 years old.

If approved, the project cost would not exceed $97.5 million, including approximately:

WCHS renovation and new construction — $88.7 million
South Campus (former Middle School) renovations — $4.4 million
Outdoor athletic fields and facilities — $4.4 million

The district continues to share factual information about the proposed referendum questions so community members can make informed decisions at the November 2026 election.
